Construction product: Upgrade works to major flood barrier
Project value: £2.9m
TEAM2100 is the Environment Agency’s 10 year programme to refurbish and replace the flood defences along the Thames estuary. The collaboration between the client & end user (EA), the programme management, principal designer, principal contractor and key Tier 2 suppliers has resulted in Integrated Delivery Team (IDT) to deliver the project.
A key challenge of this project was to ensure compliance to a ‘6 hour rule’ under the Thames Barrier and Flood Prevention Act, meaning that the asset must be operable with six hours’ notice if required. TEAM2100 proposed a design, fabrication and installation of an innovative temporary control panel as a means of maintaining operations to the gate throughout the upgrade works as an alternative to dependence on the existing panel.
The IDT approach significantly contributed to the projects success, facilitating early contractor involvement and input in the early stages, exploiting their capabilities to design, fabricate and install the temporary control panel solution. The use of this panel has provided the operational team at the Barking Barrier with additional redundancy as the panel has been retained and can be used a s a back up to the primary controls in the future and reused over time.
The winners in the Innovation category will be announced at the awards ceremony and gala dinner on the 28th of June 2018 at the Royal Lancaster London. For more information about the event or to book tickets, click here.
