Preservation and Rejuvenation

Location: London’s Oxford Street

Construction product: Retail and office space

Situated on London’s busy Oxford Street, navigating complex logistical issues were just one of the challenges faced by ISG on the project. On one occasion, it required the closure of Oxford Street to be able to lift major plant onto the roof. This road closure had a four-month lead in time and so it had to be meticulously planned, to ensure the operation was completed successfully.

Working with an existing building, they were also faced with the issue of differences in tolerances between actual dimensions and drawings. The concrete also had to be shaved back to fit the frame of the building, for which we had factored extra time in the programme for. The original features of the front columns and beams, along with the existing lift shafts were retained and the addition of 2,800 handmade striking blue faience tiles were supported with brackets to the façade of the building.

Weekly design review meetings were held throughout, providing the opportunity to assess the design and specifications changed on numerous occasions regarding aesthetics, which were managed by the design team. With a well-managed project and close working relationships established between ISG and the architect helping to ensure that the project was delivered on budget and to the agreed timeframe.

The winner of the Preservation and Rejuvenation category will be announced at the awards ceremony and gala dinner on the 28th of June at the Royal Lancaster London. For more information click here.
