Focus Logistics has introduced significant changes in how construction logistics operates by introducing SMART Logistics across the business for a cleaner, leaner, more efficient and 'closed-loop' construction process. They are investing in new initiatives that will have long-term benefits for construction, its workers and the environment.
Focus Logistics provides dynamic, efficient logistics solutions to construction business across the UK. They deal with everyting that happens on a construction site aside from the erecting of the actual building.
SMARTLogistics is a new arm of their business dedicated to innovation and technology. It changes attitudes and provides a leaner, cleaner and efficient solution to site logistics across the UK. They are putting sustainability and safety at the forefront.
This new overarching programme deals with waste, safety and vehicular activity. SmartSegegrate is the simple yet effective introduction of colour-coded wheelie bins that can be seen across their sites. The industry is reported to produce approximately 60 million tons of waste per annum and they are now segregating an unprecedented 85% of waste at source.
It’s commonplace for contractors and subcontractors to allow for 10% wastage as part of their price. However, on average, 12-18% of all materials brought to construction projects are removed as waste. SMARTLogstics changes this.
SMARTTechnology measures their business efficiency. They carefully monitor performance on all levels of the construction process from delivery to waste management. Data and digital planning are key to the success of a construction project and play a large part of their work. They are able to measure vehicle activity and pedestrian movements to highlight potential problems and areas for risk analysis.
SMARTTeams oversee how they can do better and adopt an increasingly more sustainable attitude to how they manage waste and their business. This has resulted in them identifying problems and finding solutions.
They have launched SMARTHUB this year in Hertfordshire's Innovation Quarter which is a holistic approach to moving materials and waste from source to destination creating a closed loop. It is not a consolidation centre; it is a pure material management and logistical centre with technology embedded - changing the way they work. A ‘circular system’ of reusing, sharing, repairing, refurbishing, remanufacturing as well as recycling to create a closed-loop system, minimising the use of resource input and the creation of waste, pollution and emissions.
About the Innovation Award:
Innovation is widely recognised as the critical factor for increased and sustained productivity and growth. It demonstrates an organisation’s confidence, capacity and appetite for improved performance and productivity gains. Innovation is most effective as a holistic approach that identifies both demand and ideas and is most successful when supported by collaboration between customers and the supply chain.
