Westgreen Construction Ltd is a London based company offering bespoke construction services - with a focus on art gallery projects, art exhibitions, fabrications and high-end property redevelopment, as well as retail and restaurant ventures.
Westgreen currently employs 38 PAYE employees, 18 self-employed staff and an average monthly sub-contractor workforce of around 200. The roles within the company are varied ranging from directors to contract and project managers, individual site managers, assistant site managers, surveyors, architects, estimators, health and safety professionals, marketing and administration assistants, plus trade operatives including carpenters and handymen. Many of the team have been with the company for over a decade.
Westgreen created a training matrix or skill set at company and site level which identifies the minimum training requirements for personnel which allows them to fulfil their duties. This should include agency and temporary staff. Individual training requirements are assessed by the responsible manager prior to recruitment, transfer, appointment and engagement. They are reviewed annually during the personal appraisal process or more frequently. Individual development needs including Continuing Professional Development (CPD) are included in this process, where employees can attend webinars, workshops or further CPD training. The company also agrees to pay for institute subscriptions.
Specific training requirements are assessed at a training committee meeting, pre-contract meetings, contract reviews and at other reviews as appropriate. Training, where appropriate, is delivered under an accredited scheme or by an accredited training provider such as Construction Skills, CSCS / CPCS or IOSH. Recognised NVQ /SVQ are also accepted.
As an SME, Westgreen is an active member of the LRCTG (London Regional Construction Training Group). They champion the personal development of employees and submit training award entries hosted by the LRCTG to acknowledge all training and personal development of employees during the year.
If during an employee's appraisal further development or upskilling is identified then steps are implemented to ensure this happens. For example, they had carpenters working on their projects and spotting their potential they upskilled them through internal/external courses and mentoring. These employees are now key site managers.
They recognise and encourage employees when they go ‘above and beyond’, e..g they have implemented a monthly H&S recognition award and each monthly winner receives a £100 amazon gift card. And they work in collaboration with external companies and arrange workshops on dust control and noise attenuation for site management & surveyors. The workshops showcase new equipment and possible new processes to follow when found in some situations. More workshops are planned, e.g. on work at height and vibration.
