B&M is a construction consultancy company based in Canterbury, who offers a range of services, with quantity surveying at the heart. Other services include Contract Administration, Project Management, Employer’s Agent, Clerk of Works and Principal Designer.
The company has seen a consistent pattern of growth across the last three years and this is set to continue into the next financial year with an orderbook already 50% full (based on this year’s turnover). They achieved this by working to strengthen their portfolio, taking on projects from a variety of sectors and growing expertise. Most recently, they have put their efforts into improving their residential portfolio and this has since borne fruit, with being appointed on several flagship residential schemes in Kent. They have also recently diversified and now offer Principal Designer as a service, providing a new revenue stream.
B&M is a small practice of 15 people (12 full time) and therefore there is often the perception by their competition that they are ‘batting above their weight’ with the quality and scale of the projects they work on. They have delivered many award-winning projects including The Sibson Building at the University of Kent. Their wide sector portfolio and ability to offer more than just Quantity Surveying services means they are continually able to add value, provide solutions and deliver for their clients at a highly competitive rate.
Their staff are their USP and they have developed B&M to be an Employer of Choice and fostered an environment focused on wellbeing, growth and engagement. They have a team who are capable, innovative and willing to go above and beyond for their clients.
The last 12 months have been exceptional for them. Turnover growth combined with increased scale of projects and improved service offering has put B&M in an excellent position to continue to be the most prominent QS consultancy in Kent.
In more detail
B&M has worked hard to strengthen their portfolio to enable them to negotiate bigger and better projects. They are now actively working on residential schemes valued between £45-60m. The average construction cost of a project previously worked on, whether it be just providing a feasibility or seeing it through to site, has therefore risen quite drastically, with an average at £19.8m increased from £2.5m in 2018.
They have an ISO9001 accredited Quality Management System that has been in place since 2006 and sets out business processes and procedures, meaning they deliver an excellent service, consistently.
B&M has a long-standing tradition of training and upskilling staff and this has become part of their Employer Brand and Employee Value Proposition. They bring in staff at a junior level and offer on-the-job career training, providing an alternative to the usual, costly full-time university route. They seek out people with potential, passion for numbers and the built environment and bring them through the business, supporting them with education and structured mentoring.
