Contract value: £1 billion
Approx: m2 26,392
Type of work: Redevelopment of Victorian railway station
The completion of the London Bridge Station project is the culmination of six years of major redevelopment. Applying a holistic approach to all aspects of the project, arguably Europe’s most multifaceted infrastructure development, Network Rail, Costain and the Costain supply chain have collaboratively ensured that the project creates a valuable legacy for the capital and as well as providing a blueprint for the delivery of major complex projects.
The success of the ambitious redevelopment programme was down to a complex staging process which involved demolishing the old platforms and arches below, and then reconfiguring the tracks to construct the new station in nine stages with each stage having to be completed before moving onto the next.
Over 200 suppliers were involved in the project and the relationship and interface management was critical in ensuring the project’s success. Pre-fabrication and a modular approach to construction ensured that the station remained open whilst maintain the safe operation of the station, train services and its surrounds.
London Bridge Station is now a world-class transport interchange with a grand new street level concourse that represents a dynamic piece of twenty-first century architecture that delivers significant benefits to its local area, commuters and to the Thameslink Programme as a whole.
The winners of the Civils Project of the Year and Sustainability categories will be announced at the awards ceremony and gala dinner on the 28th of June at the Royal Lancaster, London. For more information or to book tickets, click here.
